What is Cytomel ?

Liothyronine sodium is a synthetic prescription form of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine (T3), used primarily to treat hypothyroidism.

How it Works

  • Active Hormone Replacement: It replaces or supplements natural T3, which is the most biologically active form of thyroid hormone produced by the body.
  • Metabolic Regulation: It binds to nuclear receptors in cells to increase basal metabolic rate, oxygen consumption, and protein synthesis.
  • Rapid Action: It acts faster and is more potent than levothyroxine (T4).
Primery Uses
  • Hypothyroidism: Treats cases where the thyroid gland fails to produce adequate hormones, or when patients do not respond well to T4-only treatments.
  • TSH Suppression: Used alongside surgery or radioactive iodine to suppress thyroid-stimulating hormone in the management of thyroid cancer.
  • Diagnostic Testing: Utilized in thyroid suppression tests to help diagnose specific thyroid disorders.
Administration and Side Effects
  • Dosage: Taken orally as a tablet, typically once daily on an empty stomach. Dosing must be carefully individualized by a doctor.
  • Side Effects: Common or mild effects include temporary hair loss. Serious effects from high doses or overdose include rapid heartbeat, chest pain, and severe nervousness.
